NET SatisFAXtion 8.7 Manual
24
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a general term for placing telephone calls over data net-
works. The NET SatisFAXtion fax server uses Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)
and T.38 (International Telecommunication Union publication T.38) protocol to
set up calls, and to transmit fax data respectively.
2.2.2.1 A Note on Fax Server Ports versus Media Gateway Ports
The ports you see in NET SatisFAXtion are “virtual” ports. They do not corre-
spond with the physical ports on the media gateway. Outbound ports are allo-
cated lowest port number to highest (ascending), and inbound ports are
allocated from highest to lowest (descending).
2.2.2.2 Configuring NET SatisFAXtion to use a VoIP device
NET SatisFAXtion can use a variety of VoIP devices and/or SIP providers to
send and receive faxes. Find the section below that most closely resembles
your scenario.
VoIP devices are initially configured in
Re-Detect Fax Devices
. You can config-
ure VoIP device parameters afterwards in the
Change Server Settings
utility,
Start Programs NET SatisFAXtion Change Server Settings
. Click on
the
Fax Hardware Settings
button, select a port and click
Advanced
.
Click
More Settings
to override the IP address used for SIP.
